How to adjust the Danaé pattern if your ring is not 4.5 cm

Found a ring you love but its diameter is different from the one provided in the pattern Danaé? No worries! This adjustment is very simple to do and will only take you a few minutes.

In this tutorial, I explain how to easily adapt your pattern to any ring diameter.

Why modify the pattern?

The Danaé pattern was designed for a ring with a 4.5 cm outer diameter.

If you use a smaller or larger ring, the ends of the bodysuit or dress will no longer fit correctly around the ring. It is therefore necessary to slightly adjust the pattern pieces to achieve a perfect finish.

The principle

The modification simply consists of:

  • shortening the ends if your ring is smaller;
  • lengthening them if your ring is larger.

The rest of the garment remains identical: only the part that surrounds the ring is modified.

How to calculate the modification?

  1. Measure the outer diameter of your ring.
  2. Calculate the difference compared to the diameter provided in the pattern (4.5 cm).

Examples :

  • 4 cm ring → difference of -0.5 cm (4 - 4.5 = -0.5)
  • 5 cm ring → difference of +0.5 cm (5 - 4.5 = 0.5)

Since the modification is distributed on each side of the ring, you just need to divide this difference by two.

Examples :

  • 4 cm ring → -0.5 ÷ 2 = -0.25
  • 5 cm ring → 0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25

This gives you the value to add or remove on the Back left and Back right pieces. A negative result indicates the value to remove, while a positive result indicates the value to add.

To do this:

  1. Draw a line parallel to the end of each of the Back left and Back right pieces, about 5 cm from the edge, as shown in the diagram. Then, cut the pieces along these lines.

  2. Add or remove the previously calculated value between the two parts of each piece, then redraw the top and bottom lines to obtain smooth contours.

How to lengthen the back pieces of the Danaé pattern for a larger ring

Examples

4 cm ring

Difference:

4 cm − 4.5 cm = -0.5 cm

To remove:

0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25 cm

➡️ Remove 0.25 cm from the Back left and Back right pieces.

5 cm ring

Difference:

5 cm − 4.5 cm = +0.5 cm

To add:

0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25 cm

➡️ Add 0.25 cm from the Back left and Back right pieces.

In summary

To adapt the Danaé pattern to another ring diameter:

  1. measure the outer diameter of your ring;
  2. compare it to the 4.5 cm provided in the pattern;
  3. divide the difference by two;
  4. add or remove this value from the Back left and Back right pieces.

And there you go! Your pattern is now perfectly adapted to your notions, while keeping the original drape and design.
