Free tutorial: How to sew a headband?
Are you looking for ideas to sew your jersey scraps ? Why not embrace the headband trend ? Here I'm sharing a free and detailed tutorial to sew your own version.

Free Tutorial: Sew a Hair Headband
Level: Beginner
Supplies needed:
- 1 rectangle of 12 cm x (your head circumference - 2)*
- a stretch needle
For example, my head circumference is 56 cm, so I calculate 56 - 2 = 54 cm. I therefore need to cut a rectangle 54 cm long and 12 cm wide.
* Seam allowances are included.
Which fabric to choose?
For this project, you need to use a knit fabric with good recovery and a bit of stretch (like cotton jersey). You can use scraps from an old t-shirt, for example!
Steps to follow
To help you best with your project, you will find a detailed video tutorial below.
Good to know: Jersey is a stretchy material. If you sew your project with a straight stitch, the seam will break and the fabric will lose its stretch. You must therefore use special stitches for jersey: the stretch stitch or the zig-zag stitch.

Step 1:
Right sides together, pin the rectangle lengthwise. Sew all along 1 cm from the edge.
Step 2:
Turn your headband right side out.
Iron it, placing the seam allowance in the middle (cf. video).
Step 3:
Right sides together, pin the short sides of the headband together, making sure to align the side seams. (You won't be able to pin all the way, we'll leave a small opening that we'll close right after).
Sew 1 cm from the edge, making sure to leave a small opening.
Step 4:
We will now close the small opening. To achieve a clean finish, we will make an invisible seam.
Be careful not to pull your seam too tight, so it doesn't break when you put on the headband, as its stretch will be put to the test.
How to sew an invisible seam?
- Using a thread the same color as your headband and a sewing needle, thread the needle and then stitch at the end of the opening (1 in the diagram).
- Alternate from one side to the other every 0.5 cm, taking only two or three threads on your work so that the stitch is invisible on the right side.
- Once the opening is sewn, finish with a backstitch by inserting the needle into the seam groove from the inside out and passing the needle through the thread loop to knot it. Repeat this stitch two to three times.

Pauline
